Shane Gross
Photojournalist
Shane Gross is a Canadian conservation photojournalist whose work focuses on marine life and freshwater ecosystems, using visual storytelling to inspire protection of the natural world. Through immersive underwater photography, Shane highlights both the beauty of these environments and the growing threats they face.
An Associate Fellow of the International League of Conservation Photographers (iLCP) and co-founder of the Canadian Conservation Photographers Collective (CCPC), Shane has received international recognition for his work, including being named the 2024 Wildlife Photographer of the Year – Adult Grand Title Winner. His first book, Bahamas Underwater (2021), supports ocean education initiatives in The Bahamas, with proceeds benefiting the Bahamas Reef Environment Educational Foundation (BREEF).
Based in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Shane continues to collaborate with conservation organizations worldwide, using photography as a powerful tool for education, advocacy, and environmental change.

George Colaco
Marine Scientist
George is a marine scientist currently working on his PhD at the University of California, Santa Cruz. He studies the animal movement ecology of top marine predators utilizing technologies like biologging from satellite tracking tags and aerial surveys using drones. George focuses primarily on marine mammals including seals and sea lions and their interactions with predators like white sharks and oceanographic variability in the California Current. He also directly assists with fieldwork and analysis on a variety of projects, including controlled sea lion acoustic exposure experiments in the California Channel Islands, stable isotope analyses of Caspian seals and their prey, and drone measurements of cetaceans like humpback whales and Risso’s dolphins.
George grew up in Southern California and earned his B.S. at the University of California, Los Angeles studying mechanical engineering and conservation biology. He has conducted research on urban carnivores in Los Angeles, coral reef ecology in French Polynesia, biodiversity changes in Botswana, and marine conservation initiatives in Indonesia. Beyond his research, George is an avid surfer, scuba diver, traveller, teacher, and science communicator.

Ryan Jones
Marine Mammal Researcher
Ryan is a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California, Santa Cruz with a Ph.D. in Ocean Sciences. His work focuses on how anthropogenic noise influences hearing thresholds as well as foraging and migratory patterns in marine mammals. Ryan was born in San Diego, California and grew up traveling, scuba diving, spearfishing, and skiing.
Ryan began working with the Friedlaender Biotelemetry and Behavioral Ecology Lab during his PhD and while working with whales is not his primary focus, he is most interested in how these and other marine mammals are able to navigate over vast distances in a seemingly featureless ocean with limited sensory cues.

Logan Pallin
Marine Mammal Researcher
Dr. Logan Pallin, a Post Doctoral researcher with the Department of Ocean Sciences and the Institute of the Arts and Sciences at UC Santa Cruz, is an ecophysiologist with a primary interest in understanding how changes in the environment alter the physiology and health of marine megafauna populations. He works on multiple species of marine megafauna worldwide and continuously advocates for ethical animal research and effective conservation and policy. Much of Logan’s work to date has been focused along the Antarctic Peninsula, the South/Central Pacific, and the coast of California. Along with his research endeavors, Logan is an active member of the Society of Marine Mammalogy and the International Society of Wildlife Endocrinology. He also serves on the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee at UC Santa Cruz.
